File Systems: a Bit of History

The FAT file system was introduced by Microsoft in the early days of the DOS operating system. Back then, is was designed to handle files on floppy drives. The capacity of these drives was 1.44 MB (yes, that's one and a half megabytes, not gigabytes for the entire disk). Back then, FAT was restrictive as to the maximum size of a storage device; it did not permit file names longer than 8.3 characters, and it did not have any security or reliability features at all.

For users running Windows XP, NTFS is the obvious choice. NTFS is a more powerful, indefinitely secure and a much more reliable file system than FAT could ever be.

The users running Windows Vista don't really have a choice. It is simply not possible to have Vista boot from a non-NTFS partition, and that's for good. NTFS is an essential of the multiple layers of protection against unauthorized access, viruses and malware offered by Windows Vista. You can still create a FAT-formatted secondary disk in Vista, but there's no real sense bothering.

Why Using FAT?

Who would use FAT in the days of Vista and XP computers with enormously large hard drives? Apparently, there is still some use for the old file system. Most flash memory[?] cards used in digital cameras use FAT because of its smaller footprint compared to NTFS. Users of legacy operating systems and dual-boot PCs have to have at least one FAT partition for compatibility purposes. I can't think of any other reasons to use FAT today.
