IEEE1394b new rates appeared – 800 and 1600 Mb/sec (possibly, also 3200 Mb/sec) and the maximum cable length reached up to 50, 70 and even up to 100 meters.
The used cables and connectors also changed. In 1394b even the simple UTP cables of the 5th category can be applied, though only at speeds below 100 Mb/sec. For reaching maximum speeds, use of fiber optics is stipulated: plastic for the length of up to 50 meters and glass for the length of up to 100 meters.
